After a difficult childhood, Janice Dickinson moved from Florida to New York City to pursue a career in modeling after winning a national competition named “Miss High Fashion Model”. Her Eastern European ethnic appearance created some difficulty and she was turned down by several modeling agents before being discovered by fashion photographer Jacques Silberstein. She was signed by Wilhelmina and found work in the European fashion industry where her exotic looks were considered an asset.

Dickinson returned to NYC in 1978 and began working steadily at a fee of $2000 per day which was considerably higher than standard modeling rates. Ironically, she was signed by The Ford Agency who had turned her down as too exotic in the early 70s. She later left The Ford Agency for John Casablancas' new modeling agency, Elite Model Management. By the 1980s, Dickinson's face was recognized everywhere and she was considered a supermodel.

During the 1980s, Janice Dickinson appeared on the covers of Harper's Bazaar and was popular with designers like Gianni Versace, Valentino, Halston, Calvin Klein and Giorgio Armani. She was on the cover of both the American and international editions of Vogue magazine 37 times. Elle magazine featured Dickinson on their cover for 7 consecutive editions. Realizing that supermodels have relatively short careers, Dickinson prepared for new career horizons by studying photography.

In 2003 Janice Dickinson was hired as a judge on the reality series “America's Next Top Model”. The show was hosted and produced by fellow supermodel, Tyra Banks. She left the show in 2007 and began work on her own realty show, “The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency” for the Oxygen network. The show is a documentary of her attempt to launch her new career as an agent for other aspiring models. The show aired for four seasons.

She appeared in the cast of “The Surreal Life” in 2005 during the show's fifth season. The show aired for four seasons. She also starred in Abbey & Janice: Beauty & the Best for Oxygen which aired in both Britain and the United States. In the show, Dickinson acts as a mentor for aspiring British model, Abbey Clancy, giving her instructions on how to walk on the runway and setting up photo shoots and television appearances.

Janice Dickinson has continued to appear in a variety of television shows including a guest appearance on the series “Charmed” and the U.K. realty series “I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!” She was a judge on the Finnish version of Next Top Model and in 2010 she appeared on the British television show “Come Dine with Me”. She recorded a single song entitled “Crazy” in 2009 but has not announced any plans to pursue a music career.

Her most current television work is on the American show, “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew”, where she has signed for the next season. Janice Dickinson has achieved worldwide fame as a fashion and photographic model. She is also famous as a television personality in the United States and the United Kingdom. Her outspoken personality has occasionally caused some controversy, but she is well respected for her contributions to her profession.
